Richard A. Arenberg, Adjunct Lecturer at the Taubman Center, has written an opinion piece for the Washington Post about the serious consequences of changing Senate filibuster rules. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has vowed to change the Senate rule on the first day of the new Congress.

Most Providence voters — nearly 86 percent — are concerned about the city’s budget issues but are divided on suggested ways to reform the current pension plan, according to a recent public opinion survey conducted by the Taubman Center at Brown University. The survey was undertaken in conjunction with the annual Thomas J. Anton/Frederick Lippitt Urban Affairs Conference, scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 25, 2012, at Brown.

Professor Richard Arenberg, expert on Senate rules and Adjunct Professor in Public Policy at the Taubman Center had an opinion piece published in the June 13, 2012 edition of the Boston Globe. Arenberg wrote in support of the filibuster as essential element of Senate procedure. "What we have seen in recent years is bad behavior, no doubt, wrote Arenberg, “But the solution for partisan bad behavior is not rewriting the Senate rules."

On May 22 the Taubman Center named Erica Brown MPP ’13 the A. Alfred E. Taubman Scholar and Alexi Pfeffer-Gillett MPP ’13 the Darrell West Scholar. Erica Brown’s policy focus is the role that education plays in alleviating poverty in the developing world. This summer she will be working with Innovations for Poverty Action in Uganda to help design an intervention focused on women's empowerment, which will include a controlled trial to test the program. The aim is to improve health outcomes for women and children.

A September lecture at the Taubman Center by Eric Schnurer '80, president of the Drum Major Institute, led to collaboration between three Taubman Center Master’s students and the Institute. The Drum Major Institute is a progressive think tank that seeks to end poverty and promote opportunity by putting sound policy ideas to work.

Richard Arenberg, Adjunct Professor in Public Policy, lent his expertise on Senate rules to a "Washington Journal" segment featuring Bob Edgar of Common Cause. Edgar appeared on the program to talk about Common Cause's lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the use of filibuster in the Senate. Arenberg defended the virtues of the filibuster as an equalizing force.

Kelly Rogers, MPP ’12, A. Alfred Taubman Scholar, attended the 17th United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Durban, South Africa. Rogers received a grant from the Taubman Center for Public Policy to attend the conference with students from the climate change research lab at Brown’s Center for Environmental Studies, which is led by Professor J. Timmons Roberts. Rogers, whose focus is energy policy, also attended the last two UN climate change conferences in Copenhagen and Cancun.
