Christel Alvergne - Human Development Achievement: Does Local Matter?

For more than 50 years, the world has embraced the ambition of a world without poverty. Universal Human Development has become the ultimate goal of bilateral and multilateral developing policies. Alvergne will touch on why and how local development finance is crucial to enhance living standards, reduce poverty, and cope with the world’s growing population in a manner that is socially and environmentally sustainable.

Christel Alvergne is Deputy Director of the Local Development Finance Practice of United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF). UNCDF provides investment capital and technical support to both the public and the private sector. Alvergne is in charge of development programs in Africa, working in the fields of climate change, food security, local economic development and women's economic empowerment. She holds a PhD in economics and has worked for 20 years on local development and decentralization.

UNCDF has a unique mandate within the UN system. The ability to provide capital financing – in the form of grants, soft loans and credit enhancement – and the technical expertise in preparing sustainable and resilient capacity building and infrastructure projects makes UNCDF a compelling complement to other UN agencies and development partners.
