Many Americans harbor concerns about the future viability of social security and have questions about how it (and Medicare) actually are funded and how they work. It is not uncommon to hear, especially from young people, doubts about whether these programs will continue to exist until they need them later in life.

Nancy Altman, President of Social Security Works and the Chair of the Strengthen Social Security Coalition, has for 40 years focused on social security, Medicare, and private pensions. She spent two terms on the Board of Directors of the National Academy of Social Insurance. She is the author of "The Battle for Social Security: From FDR’s Vision to Bush’s Gamble" and co-author of "Social Security Works! Why Social Security Isn’t Going Broke and How Expanding It Will Help Us All".

There is no more knowledgeable expert on social security than Nancy Altman.

She will join Taubman Center Interim Director (and member of the Board of Directors of Social Security Works) Professor Richard Arenberg to discuss the current politics and future health of social security and Medicare. Special attention will be paid to the question of what these programs mean to members of the younger generations.
