In the Interstices of Latinidades: A Lecture by Robert McKee Irwin, Professor of Spanish and Deputy Director of the Global Migration Center at UC Davis
How do migrant caravans and regimes of deportation bear on racialized categories and identities? Who determines who can or can't be a Latinx? Do those migrating from Latin America to the US become Latinxs? If so, when? Right when they cross the border, or some time later? And if they do become Latinxs, do they remain so for life? In this talk we'll look to the autonomy and embodied knowledge of migrants in the volatile context of the contemporary North American border industrial complex for answers to these and other questions.
