CFP: CLACS Interdisciplinary Faculty-Student Reading/Writing Groups

The Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies invites applications for sponsorship of faculty and graduate student reading and writing groups during the 2024 - 2025 academic year. Proposed reading and writing groups may focus on a theme, an approach, a region, and/or a time period, and faculty and graduate students in all units and schools at Brown are encouraged to apply. Approved reading/writing groups will be provided with $1000, with an additional $500 research/travel stipend provided for the group's chief coordinator. Applications whose focus intersects with the CLACS 2024-25 academic theme of Indigeneity and Ecology in Latin America and the Caribbean are particularly encouraged.

Each reading/writing group should have a committed core group of participants and should meet at least four times per academic year. Supported activities may include discussions of current scholarship, research presentations, workshopping group members' writing projects, inviting in-person or remote guests to participate in discussions, and informal work-in-progress sessions. Proposed expenses may include honoraria for speakers, the costs of purchasing materials (e.g., copies of scholarly books), and food. We encourage applicants to propose invitations to visiting speakers who may also be able to offer public lectures while meeting separately with reading group members. At the end of the academic year, each group will prepare a short report on its activities.

The names/foci of funded groups, along with contact information, will be published on the CLACS website and group members should be open to including any member of the Brown university community who reaches out to them and expresses interest in participating. Using meeting space within CLACS is encouraged, but not required. Scheduled meetings should avoid conflict with existing CLACS events wherever possible.

Proposals must be submitted via email to maria_isabel_marin@brown.edu by Friday, September 20th, 2024 with the subject line "CLACS Interdisciplinary Group Application" and must include the following:

  • Group theme / title
  • Names and department/unit affiliations of at least two sponsors. Co-sponsorship between faculty and graduate students is especially encouraged.

  • One paragraph description of the group's theme and purpose
  • One paragraph describing proposed activities during academic year 2024-25, including a tentative schedule
  • A Brief budget
