Art History from the South

Art History from the South takes the gesture of world-ing into questions of art and history. In some respects probing the implications of world-ing in art and history, the intertwined visual and discursive fields, Art History from the South takes cue from Okwui Enwezor's landmark 2002 Documenta 11, and its aftermath. When Enwezor wrote "I do not raise the specter of Eurocentrism as an epithet." his concern was not merely with opening up space for artists from the south, but rather taking on the inseparable subjection of judgment and interpretation.

Book Adda

Adda means a site for collective deliberation in South Asia. This series features panel discussion of important new books written by our colleagues or those significantly involved with the Saxena Center as intellectual interlocutors.

Joint Seminar on South Asian Politics

The Brown-Harvard-MIT Joint Seminar on South Asian Politics approaches some of the big questions of politics, political economy and security, on which the South Asian region offers engaging perspectives.  The series is co-sponsored by the Saxena Center for Contemporary South Asia at the Wat­son Insti­tute at Brown Uni­ver­sity, the Weath­er­head Cen­ter for Inter­na­tional Affairs and South Asia Institute at Har­vard Uni­ver­sity, and the MIT Cen­ter for Inter­na­tional Studies.

OP Jindal Distinguished Lectures

South Asia Seminar

The South Asia Seminar series is a central interdisciplinary offering of the Saxena Center. This series of public lecutres facilitaties a convergence of figures from accross the lines of academia, civil society, literature, public policy, and journalism to contribute to the discourse on contemporary issues in the region.

Theory from the South

An interdisciplinary reading group, Theory from the South, brings together Watson faculty with colleagues, postdoctoral fellows and graduate students from across the University, to read recent essays and books that “shake the ground” so to speak, and present challenging ideas from the global south. Each month, a scholar from Brown, or elsewhere, is asked to select a text or curate a set of shorter pieces for the reading group.
