Arguments with Gandhi III: Was Gandhi an Environmentalist? | Ram Guha

On Friday, Ramachandra Guha will give his third and last lecture in the Fall 2013 O.P. Jindal Distinguished Lectures Series, "Arguments with Gandhi."

Gandhi is known (and admired) as a critic of colonialism, as a theorist and practitioner of non-violence, as a religious pluralist, and as an advocate of gender and caste equality. Of late, attention is also being paid to his work as a writer and editor. And there were yet other aspects to his life and thought. Thus, this lecture will argue that in some crucial ways Gandhi anticipated the environmental crisis that humanity finds itself in today. I will construct a ‘Gandhian’ environmental philosophy from clues in his writings, and explore how his ideas have shaped and influenced environmental struggles in India and beyond.

Ramachandra Guha is a prominent author and columnist based in Bangalore, whose research interested include environmental, social, political, and cricket history. He has been referred to by the New York Times as “perhaps the best among India’s nonfiction writers”, and was named among today’s top 100 public intellectuals in the world by Foreign Policy Magazine; he has written award-winning books and articles on a wide range of themes.
