Oscar-nominated, Indian-American film director Mira Nair to visit Brown

April 1, 2013

Oscar-nominated, Indian-American film director Mira Nair will visit Brown on April 11th to present a pre-release screening of her latest film, The Reluctant Fundamentalist. The film, which stars Kate Hudson, Kiefer Sutherland and Liev Schreiber, tells the story of a young Pakistani man educated at Princeton who, following the September 11th attacks, must negotiate the set of values he has internalized in the United States with his cultural and religious heritage.

The screening, followed by a Q&A and reception, will take place in the Martinos Auditorium, Granoff Center for the Creative Arts (154 Angell Street) on April 11th from 4pm to 8pm. Free tickets are available online at http://miranair.eventbrite.com.

Ms. Nair (whose previous films include The Namesake, Monsoon Wedding, and the documentary Salaam Bombay!) is a major figure in Hollywood and Bollywood, and an ambassador of the Indian-American cultural diaspora: her filmography places a heavy focus on international themes, on questions of national allegiance and cultural relativity, and on the difficulties and odd amalgams that result from crossing national boundaries. A Q&A with Ms. Nair and reception will follow the screening.

The Brown-India Initiative is organizing this event with the Brown International Organization. We are grateful to our co-sponsors: the Ivy Film Festival, the Office of the Dean of the College, the Office of Campus Life, the Office of International Affairs, and a number of departments at Brown and RISD.
