Nandita Das, who rose to worldwide fame in her role in films like Fire, Earth, Bawander, and Before the Rains, will be presenting her directorial debut film Firaaq at the Feminist & Women’s Media Festival next Friday.
Firaaq, which premiered in 2008, is set a month after the 2002 Gujarat riots and chronicles the traumas and everyday losses of its characters on either side of the religious divide. The film paints a complex picture of the milieu in which the riots occurred, and serves as a meditation on ethnic violence and on the trauma of losing a sense of belonging in the place that we call our homes. Nandita Das’ passion as a social worker and human rights activist shines through in this film.
