In his March 29, 2018 Indian Express article, Ashutosh Varshney argues, using insights from the larger literature on liberalism and nationalism, that liberals can support the view of the nation enshrined in the Indian Constitution, but they can't approve of Hindu nationalism. India's Constitution brings India closer to civic nationalism, but Hindu nationalism is a form of ethnic nationalism. Civic nationalism includes, whereas ethnic nationalism excludes. The exclusionary principles of the latter are inimical to modern-day liberalism. Read the full article.
