In his December 26th, 2017 Indian Express article, Ashutosh Varshney, discusses the significance of the recent Gurjarat elections and the likely national ramifications. Varshney argues that there are three bigger lessons of Gujarat: 1) that Modi would openly embrace anti-Muslim themes and images if development does not work as a campaign theme; 2) that BJP has a rural problem, but Congress has an urban problem; and 3) that Rahul Gandhi has emerged as an effective campaigner after encountering repeated doubts about it in the past.
