Professor Varshney was quoted in Time's September 5, 2021 article by Neha Thirani Bagri, "India’s Anti-Immigrant Crackdown Spreads Fear." Bagri explains how the crackdown has torn apart families and locked up hundreds of immigrants, leaving 1.9 million people fearing the could be next. Varshney says “Industrial-style incarceration detention for millions of citizens rendered noncitizens is a virtual impossibility in India because we are not dealing with 2 million Muslims, we’re dealing with about 200 million Muslim.” Read the full article.
