Ashutosh Varshney recently published a paper on "India's Democratic Longevity and its Troubled Trajectory" in Democracy in Hard Places, edited by Scott Mainwaring and Tarek Masoud (New York: Oxford University Press, 2022)? In the paper, Varshney attempts to look at the entire history of Indian democracy since 1947, explaining why democracy has lasted so long and why it is now in deep trouble. He analyzes India's experience comparatively, historically and theoretically.
