In Making Meritocracy: Lessons from India and China (New York: Oxford University Press, 2022), editors Tarun Khanna and Michael Szonyi have gathered the writing of many scholars from various backgrounds —political science, history, philosophy, anthropology, economics, and applied mathematics— to discuss how the two most populous countries in the world have addressed the issue of building meritocracy historically, in theory, and in practice.
Professor Ashutosh Varshney's chapter, Merit in the Mirror of Democracy, specifically analayzes India's affirmative action politics since independence, comparatively and theoretically. Read the full chapter.
