Tinker Field Research Grant for Research in Latin America

2017 Request for Proposals

 The Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS) at Brown University is accepting applications from Brown University graduate students (pre-candidacy, in any discipline and degree program, including professional degrees) for Tinker Field Research Grants.  Successful applicants receive up to $4,000 to support research travel during calendar year 2017 to the Spanish and Portuguese speaking countries of the Western Hemisphere (excluding the U.S. and Canada).

 The program is funded through support from the Tinker Foundation, the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs, and the Graduate School.

 Eligibility Requirements:

An applicant must:

1)    Be in the pre-dissertation stage of research in Latin America: language acquisition, site selection, developing contacts, etc.

2)    Plan to use the grant for a short research period from 2 weeks to 4 months.

3)    Be able to present completed research in a public lecture or poster session at CLACS prior to the end of the spring 2018 semester.

4)    If a citizen of a Latin American country, may receive an award to conduct research in that country provided the applicant does not have previous extensive field research experience in that country.

 Applicants must submit (1) a curriculum vitae including contact information; (2) a brief project proposal (no more than 500 words) outlining the research plan and goals for travel; (3) a simple budget for the research, including other funding sources that are confirmed or pending; and (4) a letter of support emailed directly from a faculty mentor. Materials may be submitted in Spanish or English.
