Update: Please note that the Tinker funding is no longer available through CLACS at Brown University. However, we do to provide limited support to our students interested in pre-dissertation work. Please visit our Opportunities page for more information.
The Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS) has been awarded a multi-year Field Research Grant by the Tinker Foundation. The grant supports pre-dissertation fieldwork in Latin America and the Caribbean by Brown doctoral students from all disciplines. The funds from the Tinker Foundation are matched by the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs and the Graduate School. The grant lets CLACS send approximately 10 graduate students annually to Latin America and the Caribbean for fieldwork, giving them a valuable opportunity to acquire comprehensive knowledge of language and culture, familiarize themselves with information sources relevant to their studies, conduct preliminary research, and develop contacts in their respective fields. This, in turn, will enhance the feasibility of their projects and the competitiveness of subsequent proposals for external funding in support of their dissertation research.
The mission of the Tinker Foundation is to promote the development of an equitable, sustainable, and productive society in Latin America and to enhance understanding in the U.S. of Latin America and how U.S policies may impact the region. The Field Research Grants Program is designed to provide budding scholars with a first-hand experience of their region of study, regardless of academic discipline. CLACS was one of just six Latin American Studies centers and programs across the country to receive a Tinker Field Research Grant in 2015-16. Other recipients included peer Centers at the University of California, Berkeley, New York University, and the University of Pittsburgh.
The application deadline for the Tinker Field Research Grant for academic year 2018-2019 has passed.
