6 x 6 on 12x12 en Español is modeled after RITAC’s fast-paced educational event, where six bilingual Latino artists present for six minutes each. Participants will gather for a half hour of meet & greet with light snacks, followed by a series of presentations by local Latino artists. The presentations are followed by Q & A with each presenter, and the evening continues until 8 p.m. with conversation and networking. Fifth in a series of 6x6 events and the first bilingual edition, this event is co-sponsored by the Rhode Island Teaching Artists Center and Rhode Island Latino Arts.

Latino Books Month, celebrated annually in May since 2004, promotes books by and for Latinos. This month-long celebration is sponsored by the Association of American Publishers (AAP), which encourages booksellers, librarians, and teachers to promote books by and for Latinos and encourage their communities to read Latino books in both English and Spanish. Amada Irma Pérez will discuss how she incorporates her own life into her books and will answer questions from the audience. Some of her books will be available for purchase. Currently living in Ventura, California, Amada Irma Pérez was a kindergarten through university teacher for 25 years before she wrote her first autobiographical fiction bilingual picture book My Very Own Room/Mi Proprio Cuartito in 2000. She has since published From Her to There/Mi Diario de Aqui Hasta Allá and Nana’s Big Surprise/Nana, ¡Que Sorpresa! She has won numerous awards and is an advocate for encouraging multicultural understanding through universal themes.

US merchants brought slaves not just to the Caribbean and the North American colonies in the 18th century, but also to labor in South America. American merchants (almost all Rhode Islanders) played a significant role in the trade of slaves from Africa to the Río de la Plata in Argentina and Bolivia. While most enslaved Africans arrived in Buenos Aires and Montevideo via Brazil, American traders brought more slaves directly from Africa to the Río de la Plata than any other nation in this period. On Thursday March 9, 2017 at 5:30 pm, the Newport Historical Society will host Alex Borucki for The Vernons of Newport in the River of Silver: US Slave Trading in Buenos Aires and Montevideo, 1795-1809. This lecture examines the trading operations of the Vernons of Newport in the Río de la Plata region (The River of Silver) in today’s Argentina and Uruguay, as a window into the slave routes organized by US merchants supplying Spanish Buenos Aires and Montevideo in the 1790s and 1800s. Alex Borucki is Associate Professor of History at the University of California Irvine. He is the author of From Shipmates to Soldiers: Emerging Black Identities in the Río de la Plata (University of New Mexico Press, 2015) and has published numerous articles on the slave trade and the African Diaspora. Alex is currently working on an NEH funded project, the Final Passages: the Intra-American Slave Trade Database, which will document individual shipments that transferred enslaved people between territories in the Americas.

Óscar Martínez, an award-winning journalist, will discuss the pressing issues surrounding Central American immigration. From the civil wars of the late 20th century to the continuing violence of the present day, northern Central America has been a region that expels its very own people. Largely because of this fact, migration is a phenomenon that shapes these societies. To flee from the bloody situations that they are experiencing, many migrants have to face a journey that is equally terrible.
Óscar Martínez writes for ElFaro.net, the first online newspaper in Latin America. The original edition of his book Los migrantes que no importan was published in 2010 by Icaria and El Faro, with a second edition by Mexico’s sur+ Ediciones in 2012. Martínez is currently writing chronicles and articles for El Faro’s project, Sala Negra, investigating gang violence in Latin America. In 2008, Martínez won the Fernando Benítez National Journalism Prize in Mexico, and in 2009, he was awarded the Human Rights Prize at the José Simeón Cañas Central American University in El Salvador.

Maria Helena Rueda, associate professor of Spanish and Portuguese at Smith College, will deliver the keynote lecture. The library exhibition, “Gabriel García Márquez and ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude,’” is open daily through March 31 during the library's operating hours.
